What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional Radiology in Mohali

The medical technology has done so much progress in the past one decade that it’s sometimes surprising. Interventional radiology is one such amazing medical innovation that involves medical imaging which guides minimally invasive surgical procedures that help in diagnosis, treatment and cure of many different kinds of treatments. For imaging, the modalities used are ultrasound, MRI, CT and fluoroscopy.

Why Interventional Radiology?

Many surgeries are now being switched to the method of Interventional radiology and that is because the IR procedure is known to be more effective compared to their traditional surgical counterparts. This method is any day less risky, less painful and even costs you way lesser comparatively. These reasons are influencing people to prefer the IR treatment methods and hence it is starting to expand all across the world.

How does Interventional Radiology work?

There are various broad range procedures performed under Interventional Radiology like treating tumors, placing stents or catheters into the body via a vein or an artery. With the help of the images the instruments or the catheters are guided to the exact place where the treatment and procedure is to be performed. Interventional Radiology reduces the need for keyhole (laproscopic) or traditional (open) surgery. In this kind of treatment the procedure is carried out using only a small plastic tube which is only of a size of a straw. It is startling how medical images are used to see exactly where the equipment is placed and it can be maneuverer inside the body of the patient without them undergoing any major surgery or incisions. With the ever advancing technology the range of conditions that can be treated with Interventional Radiology is continuing to grow.

The Various IR Procedures are:-

  • Stenting – This involves using small mesh tubes which treat narrow or weak arteries.
  • Angioplasty- This procedure involves the repair or the process of unblocking blocked blood vessels.
  • Embolization- This is a process where blood flow to the cancer cells is stopped.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation- This gives relief from a nerve pain.
  • Thrombolysis- Blood clots are dissolved by this process.
  • Biopsies – Tissues are studied in this technique.
